OVERSEE THE WORK

The King James Version word for the role and work of the pastor is bishop, see 1 Timothy 3:1 and Titus 1:7. In the Greek, the word is "episkope," meaning superintendence or overseer. The New International Version and New American Standard Version translate "episkope" as overseer. The word used in these verses suggests the pastor has the responsibility for the smooth operation of the church's work. Many other verses support this idea.

Considering the average pastor has attended college and seminary to prepare for his work, most pastors are capable of overseeing the work. They are probably the most prepared person in the church for this work. While many church members have training as leaders, the pastor has been given the overseer's position by God and this should be respected. Unfortunately, it is the view of many church members that the pastor should have no authority. This view destroys the God given role of the pastor as overseer. On the other hand, it must be remembered that Jesus is Lord and not the pastor. The pastor's preparation for the task does not replace God's leadership.

The overseeing or administrative part of the pastor work is often time consuming and exhausting. Other individuals are involved, to spread the work over a larger group. No matter how many directors, committees, or leaders, the responsibility ultimately falls on the pastor.
